Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews rejects bullying claims

New Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews has strongly denied allegations she bullied a female staffer.

According to The Australian, a female Senior Liberal adviser has taken stress leave from Ms Andrews office after accusing the Gold Coast MP of bullying.

According to the report, the woman first made a complaint in August last year before raising the issue in a letter again this month.

In the letter, the woman claimed she was left “suffering severe stress, anxiety, sleeplessness and depression” following what she alleges was six-months of bullying.

However, a spokesperson told The Australian that Ms Andrews “strenuously rejects these claims”.

“Minister Andrews values a respectful and professional work environment for all of her staff,” the spokesperson said.

Speaking to the ABC on Wednesday, Federal Tourism Minister Dan Tehan said the Government is taking all allegations of workplace bullying seriously.

“As you know, the Federal Government is taking this issue very seriously, and we’ve put in place a number of measures to make sure that we deal with workplace cultural issues,” he said.

“And we’ll continue to do this. There’s been a complaints mechanism, a confidential complaints mechanism which has been set up to look at issues around workplace bullying and other matters.

“And we’ll continue to do all we can to make this place, Federal Parliament, an exemplar when it comes to workplace culture and that’s the mission that we’ve set on.

“It’s going to require all political parties to cooperate together to make sure that Parliament House becomes a model when it comes to workplaces right across this nation.”

It comes after Minister Andrews was officially sworn in as the new Minister for Home Affairs on Tuesday.
