In one year, Cyber Aashvast recovers Rs 11 cr lost to frauds

In just one year of its launch, the Cyber Aashvasht project has managed to recover a total of Rs 11.01 crore lost by 5,167 people to cyber fraud, figures put out on Monday stated.

The cyber crime cell has also frozen 72,000 bank accounts, closed down 250 fraud websites and pulled down 850 fake OLX advertisements in the last one year, while addressing some 2,000 complaints of cyber bullying were where a majority of the complainants were women and teenage girls.

Speaking about Cyber Ashvasht operations, DCP of Cyber Crime Amit Vasava said time and speed of reporting are very important in cases of financial fraud. People should dial 100 immediately in case of any financial fraud. A majority of frauds the cell handled were related to customer care number frauds, committed after victims search for customer care numbers on Google. Vasava said frauds related to Paytm increased manifold during the lockdown months of April, May, June and July, but declined thereafter.

Always take customer care numbers genuine websites, don’t call up any number you find on Google.

Use call identification service while calling up any number.

If the customer service is authentic, it will have the registered email ID and mobile phone number. Ask the caller to directly send the payment link to the registered email ID. Frauds or a third party usually does not have any details of customers’ registered email ID or phone number.

Never transact any business with an unknown person and be careful while using UPI mode of payment.

Never entertain unknown callers, open links or call up any number mentioned in unknown messages.

Generally payment platform do not carry out KYC updating over phone, so be careful.

If any transaction happens outside your knowledge then call up 100 number.
